230. In Pilates, hard is not the same thing as effective - with Raphael Bender

As Pilates instructors, we all roll our eyes when people think Pilates is "easy" or "just stretching".

It's definitely hard.

But... that doesn't mean it's effective (for strengthening).

It depends how you do it.

Listen in to find out the science of how to make your Pilates sessions BOTH hard, AND effective for strengthening.

Read the research:

  • You need to work to within a couple of repetitions of failure to significantly stimulate strengthening here and here
  • As instability goes up, force production (and thus strengthening stimulus) goes down here
  • To keep getting stronger over time you need to progressively add load here
